Children given the chance to make their mark on new Athletics Facility

Share

Pupils from schools in Blackburn with Darwen are being invited to submit designs to brighten up the main outside wall of new athletics facility in Witton Park in the town.

Youngsters are being asked to come up with drawings of the first things they think of when they hear the word “Athletics”. The pupil who comes up with the winning design will work with architects and graphic designers to create the piece of artwork. It will then be embossed on to cladding panels that will be used for the building.

The winner will also receive £100 for art or sports equipment and their school will get £1000 for its art department.

The competition is the brainchild of Councillor Jim Smith, chair of Blackburn with Darwen Planning Committee, and Councillor Damian Talbot, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Young People. The competition is being supported by Capita.

Councillor Smith said: “We want young people to really feel that this is theirs. I am very excited to see the wonderful concepts pupils come up with.”

The revamped arena is on course to open next year after a £2million upgrade
