Massive brawl in street with hammers, sticks and machete

A massive brawl took place on Blackburn Road in Accrington near to the junction with Swiss Street last Saturday night (6th Ocotber 2012) at around 10pm.

Up to 20 men were seen fighting and a 35 year old man sustained a head injury and broken jaw in the incident. He required surgery at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Witnesses reported weapons being seen, including hammers, sticks and a machete, although none of the weapons have yet been recovered

All the men involved are described as Asian and police are appealing to anybody that witnessed the fighting to come forward.

Detective Inspector Jill Johnston said: “This was an incident of large scale disorder that involved between 15 and 20 Asian men fighting in the middle of the street, to the extent that they brought traffic to a standstill for a number of minutes.

“On police arrival the crowd dispersed but three men, one aged 22, and two aged 23 have since been arrested and are now on police bail whilst we continue our investigation.

“The motive for the fight is not known at this time but we do believe that all the men involved were known to each other.

“I’d ask anyone that was in the area that witnessed the fight or with any information that could assist with our investigation to call Lancashire Police on 101.”
