Blackburn with Darwen Council are warning motorists to avoid using Preston Old Road as a route into Blackburn and also to avoid using J3 of the M65.

United Utilities are going to be undertaking significant works on Preston Old Road, from 21 May 2012 for seven weeks. They’ll be working in between Tower Road and Witton Park main entrance. It will be managed by means of temporary traffic lights.

Advance warning signs are going to be displayed to advise motorists when the work is due to begin, but drivers are advised to use an alternative route into the town centre as soon as the work has started.

The work is connected to the United Utilities’ sewer improvement works being undertaken at Witton Park during the next 12 months.

Coming into Blackburn, road users are advised to not come off at J3 of the M65 motorway but instead come off at J4 and J5 instead. There will be a diversion via Livesey Branch Road as well as the A666 or via Green Lane, Livesey Branch Road, and A666

Leaving town, the primary diversion route is going to be Montague Street, Freckleton Street, A666, Earcroft Way up to J4 of the M65. Alternatively, drivers will be redirected along Montague Street, Freckleton Street, A666, Livesey Branch Road, Preston Old Road up to J3 of the M65.

Stuart Scott, Highways Manager said: “This work by United Utilities is essential and the Council has no control over it. However, we are liaising with UU to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and motorists are warned as early as possible about any possible works.”
