Memorial Service for Bishop’s Wife today


A Memorial Service in thanksgiving for the life, work and witness of Jennie Chesters will take place on Saturday 30th April 2011 at 11am in the Cathedral.

Mrs Jennie Chesters, wife of Bishop Alan Chesters, died on Tuesday 8th March 2011 aged 77 after a long period of illness.

Jennie and Bishop Alan lived for seven years in Tarvin, near Chester, after +Alan retired as Bishop of Blackburn. At the end of last year the couple – married since 1975 – moved to a flat in The College of St Barnabas, a home for retired Anglican clergy and spouses in Surrey. In recent years Jennie had coped with various health problems, including major heart surgery, a fractured hip and sight problems.

Jennie Chesters was born in London, but was brought up by her grandparents in Sunderland. A teacher, she became the head of four schools as the couple moved around the country.In more recent times, Jennie ran the Tarvin branch of the Mothers’ Union and was a vice-president of the MU in Chester
